~About Randy MacNeil~
Randy MacNeil is a black and white film photographer known amongst artists and industry people as 'one of the real ones'. He has stayed under the radar most of his career. Invitations to photograph music came from the artists and their management in most cases.
Randy was fortunate enough to study under the wing of Serge Gilbert at La Cité Collégiale in Ottawa where he was technically trained for all types of photography. Being from Cape Breton, music and musicians were a part of life. Kitchen parties could erupt at anytime. His appreciation for music came from his father who dragged him around to ceilidhs, festivals and other kitchen parties. This is why his decision to focus primarily on music photography came naturally.
After over 5 years of intense work and collaboration with Francine Aubrey, Randy has finally published 'A Portrait of Blues in Canada - A Photographic Documentary' on the Canadian Blues Scene and its history as told by the artists themselves. Randy continues to document International and Canadian musicians. Being constantly introduced to new and old interesting Canadian blues talent from all corners of the country, I know there will certainly be a Volume 2 as well as other books covering different styles of music in the coming years. The more we dig, the deeper the well...
